The Foxy Beach section of Boulders Colony is designed for bird watching and habitat protection. Elevated wooden boardwalks wind through coastal fynbos vegetation and over coastal dunes, bringing visitors right above penguin nesting burrows.
At the end of the main boardwalk walkway sits a spacious viewing platform looking directly onto Foxy Beach cove. Hundreds of adult penguins gather on the white sand, waddling between the ocean water and their nests in the bushes.
Photography Tips & Visitor Etiquette
Foxy Beach boardwalks provide excellent photo opportunities. To capture clean shots without crowds in the background, visit during the early morning hours right as the gate opens at 07:00 AM (or 08:00 AM outside summer).
While penguins frequently walk directly underneath or beside the wooden handrails, remember that visitors must stay on the boardwalk at all times. Reaching over rails to touch or feed penguins is strictly prohibited. Flash photography is also discouraged as it startles nesting birds.
